5 Cultural Things to Do in Cannes in Winter

Cannes moves at a different pace in winter.

The city is quieter, the big summer events are over, and some places are actually more enjoyable because of it. There are fewer crowds, more time to explore, and a chance to see another side of Cannes altogether.

If you want to discover the city beyond the beaches and the Croisette, here are 5 cultural things to do in Cannes in winter.

1. Visit the Musée des Explorations du Monde

The Musée des Explorations du Monde is set inside the former castle overlooking Le Suquet.

Its collections cover several different worlds, from Mediterranean archaeology to art from other cultures and musical instruments from around the globe.

Part of the appeal is the setting itself. You are not simply visiting a museum; you are also stepping into one of the older buildings in Cannes, in a part of the city with a strong sense of history.

In winter, it is an easy place to spend time at a slower pace and discover something beyond the city’s best-known sights.

2. Take the boat to Fort Royal on Sainte-Marguerite Island

Winter does not mean you have to give up on the Lérins Islands.

A short boat ride brings you to Sainte-Marguerite, where you can visit Fort Royal and the Musée du Masque de fer.

The visit includes the cell linked to the story of the Man in the Iron Mask, along with archaeological collections and several spaces that help explain the history of the fort.

The trip is also worth it for the change of atmosphere. Within minutes, you leave the city centre behind and arrive somewhere much quieter, which makes the whole experience feel like a real break from Cannes.

3. See an exhibition at La Malmaison

Located directly on the Croisette, La Malmaison regularly hosts exhibitions focused on modern and contemporary art.

It is not an overwhelming venue, which makes it easy to fit into an afternoon without planning your whole day around it.

Its central location is another advantage. You can visit an exhibition, then continue towards the city centre or the seafront without having to travel across town.

The programme changes throughout the year, so it is worth checking what is showing before you go.

4. See a performance at the Palais des Festivals

The Palais des Festivals is not only about cinema and major trade events.

Throughout winter, it also hosts theatre, dance, concerts, comedy and circus performances.

It is a good way to see another side of a venue that most visitors associate mainly with the Cannes Film Festival.

If you are staying for a few days, checking the programme in advance can be well worth it. An evening performance at the Palais is an easy way to finish the day without leaving central Cannes.

5. Explore the Cannes Cinéma programme

In Cannes, cinema obviously carries on long after May.

Cannes Cinéma runs screenings, talks, themed sessions and film-related events throughout the season.

The winter programme remains active, giving visitors the chance to see films in a setting that often feels more curated than a standard cinema visit.

Some screenings also include discussions or talks, adding more context around the films being shown.

In a city so closely tied to cinema, it is one of the most natural cultural activities to include in a winter stay.

A different way to experience Cannes

Winter is a good time to discover the more cultural side of Cannes.

You can move from a museum in Le Suquet to a boat trip to Sainte-Marguerite, then spend the afternoon at an exhibition or the evening at the Palais.

And because the city is quieter at this time of year, it is often easier to slow down and actually enjoy each place rather than rushing from one stop to the next.
